The series aired its fifth and final season on the USA Network between April and June 2021.
Queen of the south is one of the most popular television series on the USA Network, and the story improves considerably with each season. The series wasn’t supposed to end with season five, but sadly that’s the case.
Production was delayed due to the pandemic and aired on the USA Network from April to June 2021. There were 13 episodes originally planned for season 5, but it was shortened to 10.
Netflix premiere status
Each season of the show came to Netflix one year after its original airing. Season 1 arrived on May 9, 2017, Season 2 arrived on May 22, 2018, and Season 3 arrived on May 7, 2019. The most recent Season 4 arrived on the streamer on June 6, 2020.
Since Season 5 aired earlier this year, we can’t expect it to hit Netflix in 2021. If we follow its usual pattern, Season 5 won’t arrive until March or April 2022, a year after its original premiere.
What is the story about?
Queen of the south is a television adaptation of the soap opera The Queen of the South, which is itself an adaptation of the homonymous novel by the Spanish author Arturo Pérez-Reverte. The protagonist is Teresa Mendoza, a poor Mexican woman who becomes rich and powerful by building an important drug empire.
Mendoza’s journey begins in the Culiacán neighborhood in Sinaloa, Mexico. She falls in love with a man who works for the Mexican drug cartel. But after he was assassinated, he had no choice but to escape to the United States. She meets a person from her past and asks for their help to take down the cartel that haunts her. Once this is done, little by little he builds his own empire. But that gives way to newer and more deadly problems.
