WASHINGTON, DC — The percentage of Americans who rate their lives well enough to be considered “prosperous” on Gallup’s Life Evaluation Index was 55.1% in November-December, 4.1 percentage points lower than the 14-year high of 59.2% measured in June. During the initial outbreak of COVID-19 and the economic shutdown, the percent prosperous plummeted nearly 10 points to 46.4% at the end of April 2020, matching the record low measured during the Great Recession.

The most recent results, from November 29 to December 2. 5, 2021, are based on 4,001 American adults surveyed online as part of the Gallup Dashboard, a non-subscription, probability-based panel of approximately 115,000 adults in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. These interviews were conducted after the omicron variant was detected in South Africa, but before the highly contagious COVID-19 variant became widespread in US delta cases. […]
