Known for her fantastic fantasy worlds and wacky characters, Rachel Maclean’s That is not getting married! at Josh Lilley Gallery he takes us one step further into the surreal. Three words to sum it all up? Disney-on-crack. And we love it! “Mirror mirror in my hand, who is the cutest on earth?” Why, Wednesday, of course.

That is not getting married! is strangely and wonderfully immersed in various mediums on the journey of My, our adorable protagonist, with sparkling eyes, Disney style and rosy cheeks. The center of the exhibition is an animated short film showing Mi’s trials and tribulations in the forest. Gravity is reversed as Mi, obsessed with beauty, struggling with the concept of self-love, struggling with her withered and grotesque counterpart (a ‘withered old woman’ appearing under Mi’s skirt), highlighting fear and disdain for society to grow old. Meanwhile, a seemingly innocent hand mirror, which Mi has been using as a vlogging device, tries to assault Mi, revealing herself to be a very dangerous character that causes plot anxiety.

Mi’s dangerous path and tense mood are reflected throughout the exhibition through eye-catching paintings, tapestries, and a 3D-printed sculpture. Again, much like Mi’s experience in the woods, gravity pulls both ways within Maclean’s work, with each piece associated with an inverted double, revealing new shapes and faces. The movie itself is shown in an upside down mirror in an upside down room, complete with a pink carpet on the ceiling.

Hidden behind the caramel pink veneer and strong pops of color, That is not getting married! It disguises disturbing themes of sexualization, social media, our obsession with youth and beauty, as well as repulsive attitudes toward aging. It’s haunting and weird, but also charming and endearing, so it’s no surprise that the show has been extended by a week due to overwhelming demand.
