Because it is important: Hoping to get hold of an elusive PlayStation 5 console this holiday season, but worried that your chances are slim to nil? Sony is giving US customers a glimmer of hope by allowing them to register for its PS5 restock events.
Sony emphasizes that it will only have a limited number of PS5 consoles available for purchase by US customers, so if you want the opportunity to receive an invitation to a restocking event, sign up here without delay.
Anyone wishing to participate requires a US address and a PlayStation Network ID (must be logged into their PSN account) and must opt-in to receive marketing emails from Sony.
Doing this does not guarantee that you will receive an invitation. Sony says its selection process is based on previous interests and activities of PlayStation. While there is some ambiguity as to what that exactly means, it is probably to verify that the accounts are not recently created by resellers with the sole intention of buying a PS5 and then selling it for a fortune on eBay.
Sony also says that it is limiting PS5 console pre-order reservations to one per PSN ID – that is, a PS5 console or a PS5 digital edition, not both.
Starting in November 2021, those selected will receive an email with the date, time, and instructions for purchasing a PS5 console. Guests have a limited time to make an order reservation, the exact details of which will be included in the notification.
The PlayStation 5 has been one of the consumer products hardest hit by the chip shortage. AMD, whose custom SoC powers the PS5, believes that the situation will not begin to improve until the second half of 2022. In May, Sony said that the production of the PS5 would increase in the second half of this year and that it “expects” supply. it will get better this holiday season, but don’t hold your breath.
