MOSCOW – Russian news agencies say a Siberian coal mine fire killed 52 miners and rescuers.

Authorities previously said rescuers found 14 bodies and that the search for 38 missing people was halted for safety reasons, due to a buildup of explosive methane gas and a high concentration of toxic fumes from the fire.

State news agencies Tass and RIA-Novosti cited emergency officials as saying there was no chance of finding survivors.

The Interfax news agency quoted a representative from the regional administration who also put the death toll from Thursday’s fire at 52.
