Manchester United are moving closer to appointing Ralf Rangnick as the club’s interim manager until the end of the season, according to various reports.

The Red Devils have had advanced conversations with the 63-year-old, and he is expected to be announced soon as a short-term replacement for fired former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and current interim Michael Carrick, who was Solskjaer’s assistant.

Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino has been on United’s radar, but the Ligue 1 giants reportedly rejected an initial investigation. Rangnick would run the ship until the end of the season.

PLUS: Why Pochettino is the perfect coach for United

Pochettino, the former Tottenham boss, is eager to move to Old Trafford and would be willing to leave PSG midway through the current season. However, it is understood that the intermediaries probed the French team for letting him go and were turned away, and the Ligue 1 team was not interested in allowing their head coach to leave for the season.

Consequently, United’s board has been working through a five-man shortlist while looking for an interim successor to Solskjaer.

Talks with Rangnick are understood to have been positive and he is expected to take office in six months. Then he could stay after the season as a consultant.

It was with Schalke that he enjoyed the greatest success, finishing runner-up in Germany’s top flight in the 2004-05 season and winning the DFB-Pokal and the DFL-Supercup in 2011.

In 2012, Rangnick became director of football for RB Leipzig and Austrian sister club Red Bull Salzburg, and the 63-year-old played an important role in helping Leipzig rise from the fourth tier of German football to the Bundesliga.

Rangnick is currently the Manager of Sports and Development at Lokomotiv Moscow of the Russian Premier League, where he was appointed to the position in July 2021.
