What just happened? One of the best small form factor cases on the market has been discontinued. Ncase, makers of the M1 SFF chassis, recently posted a notice on their website stating that they have decided not to order another batch of M1 Classic housings. As such, the product has effectively reached the end of its useful life after eight years of operation.
the M1 was conceived in 2012 by two members of the HardOCP forum. User Wahaha360 liked it SilverStone SG03 SFF Chassis, but I wanted something made entirely of aluminum. With no solution on the market, the user approached Necere, who helped design the chassis of his dreams.
Amazingly, they were able to watch the project through to completion, which included a successful Indiegogo campaign as well as manufacturing by Lian Li. The whole process has been archived at the Hard Forum if you want to follow the story.
In its goodbye message, Ncase said that evolving component requirements and changes in the market have made the M1 a less attractive option of late. In fact, video cards are much larger these days than they used to be, and with space already at a premium, compatibility suffered.
In particular, this is not the end of Ncase, but rather an opportunity for something new. The team said they have new products in development, but are not yet ready to commit to production or provide a time estimate. For now, the Ncase website will remain active for informational purposes.
