6.1 magnitude earthquake shakes India-Myanmar border region and shakes Bangladesh: National

A little deep and strong earthquake magnitude 6.1 hit the border region between Myanmar and India early Friday, the National Center for Seismology of India said.

The earthquake was felt in Chittagong in Bangladesh and as far away as Calcutta in eastern India, according to eyewitness accounts posted on the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centers (EMSC) website and by users on Twitter.

“Very strong,” posted one of those witnesses to EMSC from Chittagong, which is about 184 kilometers (115 miles) west of the earthquake’s epicenter.

EMSC calculated the magnitude of the quake at 5.8, after previously giving it a magnitude of 6.0, and said the epicenter was about 126 km southeast of Aizawl in northeast India.
