Wydad qualified for the final of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League

Wydad Athletic Club’s quest for a third TotalEnergies CAF Champions League title remained on course after reaching the final despite a 1-1 draw at home against Angola’s Petro de Luanda in the match. second leg of their semi-final match on Friday.

The Moroccans progressed 4-2 on aggregate, having won the first leg in Luanda 3-1 last week. They are in the final for the first time since the 2018-19 season.

Petro broke the tie through Gleison, but Amine Farhane equalized at his side to ensure they avoided defeat at home and earned a place in the final against champions Al Ahly or ES Setif, with the two teams playing their second leg on Saturday.

The Angolans seeking their first qualification for the final came into the match needing a strong performance to reverse the first leg loss and got off to a fast start from the blocks.

They had their first goal threat in the 17th minute, when captain and top scorer Tiago Azulao quickly deflected from distance, but his shot went over the crossbar.

However, three minutes later they broke the tie with a brilliant goal from Gleison.

The striker collected the ball from the right before sliding to the edge of the area and executing a brilliant left-footed shot that rolled into the bottom left of Wydad’s goal.

The home team woke up from their slow start and, buoyed by the ability of the home crowd, equalized in the 28th minute when defender Farhane snuck in to head in a Yahia Attiyat Allah corner.

The goal upset Petro’s calculations, which knew that a second goal would have put them ahead. However, they kept up the fight and sniffed out the goal in the 37th minute when Azulao twisted and turned inside the area, but his final shot sailed wide.

In the second half, Petro went all out with Azulao trying twice from distance, but could not get the second goal of his own.

In the 75th minute they came close when Yano went for another scorching ranger, but the effort was deflected. Anderson Cruz also had a chance with a shot from the left but it was saved by the goalkeeper.

In death, Petro should have scored the game-winner that night, but Wydad goalkeeper Ahmed Reda Tagnaouti made an excellent double save to block a Cruz shot and Job’s rebound.
