At first glance, Saturday’s nonconference showdown between No. 16 Ole Miss and independent Liberty may not seem like a must-see television show. Fortunately, Sporting News is here to set the record straight.
The Rebels and Flames reunion offers several compelling stories, including the quarterback battle between Ole Miss ‘Matt Corral and Liberty’ Malik Willis. The Rebels gunman remains one of the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy in 2021, throwing 2,202 yards and 15 touchdowns to two interceptions while adding 538 rushing yards and 10 more touchdowns.
Willis, meanwhile, has 1,986 passing yards and 21 touchdowns on six interceptions. Like Corral, Willis is also a talented running back, rushing for 697 yards and nine touchdowns.

This will also be the first return of Liberty coach Hugh Freeze to Oxford since his resign before season 2017. Freeze, who had beaten Alabama Nick Saban in both 2014 and 2015, left the show after it was discovered that he made calls to an escort service on a phone issued by the university. Since then, he has enjoyed a resurgence at Liberty, leading the Flames to records of 8-5, 10-1 and 7-2 in 2019, ’20 and ’21, respectively.
It’s also worth seeing how Ole Miss responds to an emotionally draining loss to Auburn, a game in which coach Lane Kiffin’s aggressive play three times resulted in turnovers in the Auburn red zone. The Rebels will almost certainly be out of the SEC West championship competition, but how they prepare for this game will go a long way to how this team ends the season.
