New York: A month after announcing on Instagram that she was pregnant, pop star Britney Spears posted an update saying she suffered a miscarriage, writing, “We have lost our miracle baby.”
“Maybe we should have waited to announce it until we were further along,” read the message, which was posted to Spears’ Instagram account and attributed to her and her partner, Sam Asghari, on Saturday US time. However, we were too excited to share the good news.”
When Spears, 40, let it be known that she was pregnantMany saw her announcement not only as good news, but also as a declaration of will after being released from a guardianship that had governed her life since she was 20 years old.
That arrangement began in 2008, amid concerns about her mental health and possible substance abuse, when a California judge awarded supervision of her personal life and finances to her father, James P. Spears.
during court proceedings last year stemming from her request to have the conservatorship resolved, Spears testified during a 23-minute speech that the arrangement had been “abusive,” adding that she had not been allowed to remove an IUD.
“I want to be able to get married and have a baby,” Spears said then. “I was told at this point in conservatorship that I can’t get married or have a baby.”
The statement that she was not allowed to get pregnant was particularly surprising, even in a speech in which Spears also told the court that she had been put on Lithium and forced to work against her will.
Some reproductive rights advocates said the forced birth control was legally questionable, a violation of Spears’ autonomy and her basic human rights.
