Paul Rowley will get his first chance as Super League head coach in 2022 after being named as the new man in charge of the Salford Red Devils, with Marc Sneyd returning to the club as his first signing.

Rowley, who previously had successful spells in charge of Leigh Centurions and Toronto Wolfpack in the Championship, has been working for the Red Devils in different roles under the direction of former head coaches Ian Watson and Richard Marshall.

But, following Marshall’s departure after just 11 months in charge, the 46-year-old was handed the top job on a two-year deal, with former interim Leigh Centurions head coach Kurt Haggerty and Danny Orr, who They are already on the Salford team. , named as his assistants.

“I am excited for the challenge, I am renewed after having had a break as a coach,” said Rowley. “I want to raise the standards at the club and create a different environment, one that walks a little higher.

Rowley went on to coach upon his retirement from the game in 2006 after a 14-year career that included two stints with Leigh, in addition to representing the Halifax and Huddersfield Giants.

Assuming the position of head coach of the Centurions in 2012, he guided the club to consecutive championship titles in 2014 and 2015 and then took over the Toronto Wolfpack for its inaugural season in 2017, guiding them to promotion to League One in the first attempt. and one step away from promotion to the Super League the following year.

Rowley held a consulting role under Watson when Salford reached the Super League Grand Final and the Challenge Cup Final in 2019 and 2020 respectively, and later took on a full-time role as the Red Devils’ first head of rugby development. , supervising the paths for young players. .

His inauguration as head coach on Friday saw Sneyd, who began his playing career with Salford and debuted in 2010, as the first recruit under Rowley, with the midfielder making the surprise trade from Hull FC.

A two-time winner of the Challenge Cup and the Lance Todd Trophy during his time with Hull FC, Sneyd has signed a three-year contract with the Red Devils and is delighted to be back where it all began for him.

“I’m very excited to get back to Salford,” Sneyd said. “They have made great signings and the squad seems to be taking shape.

“I’m excited to be on the field with the guys now and get caught up with them.”

Sneyd is Salford’s eighth pick ahead of the 2022 Super League season in total, joining King Vuniyayawa, Amir Bourouh, Sitaleki Akauola, Brodie Croft, Shane Wright, Ryan Brierley and Deon Cross to move to AJ Bell Stadium.
