our reckless White House | Powerline

The Biden Administration blames everyone but itself for everything that is going wrong in the country today, from inflation to baby formula shortages. the Wall Street Journal today walk through all the distortions the federal government has imposed on the baby formula market, including trade restrictions on imports from Europe:

The baby formula shortage in the United States illustrates how bigger government can make big business bigger, thus limiting competition and choice. This is especially noteworthy as Democrats push to expand government rights and control over the private economy with Medicare for All, free child care, universal pre-K, and more.

But the story gets worse. Yesterday, a White House press spokesman blamed Abbott’s baby formula for the deaths of two babies. Abbott has responded appropriately on Twitter: here’s the unwind thread:

At the White House press conference today, the Press Secretary wrongly said that our formulas were contaminated and that two babies had died. The death of these infants is a tragedy. 🧵 [1/11]

However, the facts are critical: An exhaustive investigation by Abbott, the FDA and the CDC found no evidence that our formulas caused childhood illness. Specifically… [2/11]

The CDC concluded its investigation without finding a link between our formulas and childhood illnesses.

We perform microbiological testing on products prior to distribution, and no Abbott formulas distributed to consumers have tested positive for Cronobacter or Salmonella. [3/11]

All retained products tested by Abbott and the FDA during the facility inspection were negative for Cronobacter and/or Salmonella. No Salmonella was found at the Sturgis facility. [4/11]

The Cronobacter sakazakii found in environmental testing during the investigation was found in non-product contact areas of the facility and has not been linked to any known childhood illnesses. [5/11]

Genetic sequencing of the two available samples from sick infants did not match the Cronobacter strains in our facility. The samples from sick babies did not match each other, meaning there was no connection between the two cases. [6/11]

In all four cases, samples of the Abbott formula used by the child were tested by the state, the FDA and/or the CDC. In all four cases, all unopened containers tested negative. [7/11]

In three of the four cases, open containers from the children’s houses were also tested; two of the three tested negative. The only positive was from an open container from the baby’s home, and it tested positive for two different strains of Cronobacter sakazakii… [8/11]

…one of which matched the strain that caused the baby’s infection, and the other matched a strain found in a bottle of home distilled water used to mix the formula. Again, none of the strains matched the strains found in our plant. [9/11]

The babies consumed four different types of our prepared formula over the course of almost a year, and the illnesses occurred over several months in three different states. [10/11]

The formula of this plant did not cause these childhood diseases. [11/11]

Good for Abbott for fighting back against the reckless White House.
