NHL COVID-19 Case Tracker 2021-22: Updated List of Players Missing Games This Season

The 2021-22 NHL season is underway, and while most players are fully vaccinated (only Tyler Bertuzzi remains the most notable name remaining unvaccinated), COVID-19 continues to hit the charts every night.

Several league stars, including Patrick Kane, Erik Karlsson and, as of November 3, Sidney Crosby, have tested positive.

Players who test positive are placed on the list of COVID protocols not included in the list. It should be noted that other players could also end up on this list. Like last season, “COVID protocol-related absences” can be the result of a number of factors, including an initial positive test that remains unconfirmed until the confirmatory test is performed; mandatory isolation for symptomatic players; quarantine required as high risk close contact; isolation based on a confirmed positive test result; Quarantine for travel or other reasons.

What is the NHL’s COVID protocol in 2021-22?

With a vaccine now available, the rules are a bit different than last season. A vaccinated player is described as anyone two weeks after the second dose.

Unvaccinated players cannot travel to Canada due to quarantine restrictions in the country. Therefore, clubs can suspend players for not being able to participate and require them to lose one day’s pay for each day they miss. Players who are not vaccinated are also required to follow most of the rules in effect last year, which include, but are not limited to, wearing masks at all times while not on the ice; exercise or eat; keeping 6 feet apart; do not share rooms or spaces, such as cars, with other players.

Vaccinated players are only tested every 72 hours or if they show symptoms, while unvaccinated players must be tested every day. Players who test positive (a confirmed positive) and are symptomatic should be isolated. They should remain in isolation until at least 10 days have passed since symptoms first appeared, symptoms have improved, and medical personnel authorize them to return. Depending on the symptoms (eg, cough, fever, chest pain), a cardiac exam should also be performed and cleared.

If they test positive and have to miss the games, the vaccinated players are listed as having a hockey-related injury and paid. Unvaccinated players are not paid.
