Liberal Newspaper Says Florida Under DeSantis Is Like Communist Cuba

This week, the Miami Herald ran an article comparing the similarities between Florida under popular Republican Governor Ron DeSantis and…communist Cuba.

Yes really.

The justification of the author Fabiola Santiago? Governor DeSantis Signed House Bill 395designating November 7 as Victims of Communism Day and requiring, starting next year, 45 minutes of instruction in middle schools on the dangers of communism.

Because educating children about the dangers of communism is very… communist?

Ban Books and Moms for Freedom

Santiago uses comparisons to Cuba in the form of book bans, censorship, and indoctrination. But first, let’s talk about the book ban.

In Santiago’s piece he says:

“Mathematics textbooks and literary books are being banned because a committee to Cuba, also known as “Mothers for Freedom”, made up of enthusiastic and Republican-empowered citizens in a state of hysteria, deemed them inappropriate and sounded the alarm”.

Part of what is wrong refers to the The Florida State Department of Education rejected 41% of math textbooks this year.

To see why, we need only look at what is being pushed into the textbooks.

An example was a question about polynomials. The question discussed that two million people test their racial bias using an online version of the implicit association test.

Mothers by Liberty Hillsborough County Chapter Member Jessica Graham succinctly put :

“For me, it only teaches math, it only teaches math. Why does racial prejudice have anything to do with math? It doesn’t, it doesn’t.”

So Graham doesn’t want leftist postmodern racialized propaganda in math textbooks. Just like the Communist Party of Cuba!

You can read more about that in one of my previous articles here.

Comparing parents to the Cuban Communist Committee will surely not anger parents who have been demonized and ignored for the past two years. That has been working very well for the left; keep doing that please.

Is DeSantis censoring teachers?

When Santiago refers to censorship, he is referring to both the alleged “Don’t Say Gay” bill, which you can read more about hereand House Bill 7.

house bill 7 forbids any teaching that might make students feel responsible for historical wrongs based on their race, color, sex, etc.

Santiago affirms that educators are being censored, and goes further by saying:

“Nothing that bothers whites. Nothing about being gay or trans from kindergarten through third grade when kids are filled with questions about their classmates and themselves.”

I have a kindergarten. She asks questions like the following:

“Why do alligators have teeth?”

“Why do you drink coffee? Smells bad.”

Why 2 + 2 = 4 and 2 times 2 = 4?

Unless he got it into his head to ask, he wouldn’t be curious about homosexuality, transgender issues, or anything like that.

The misnamed “Don’t Say Gay” bill doesn’t even have the word “gay.”

Teach about slavery but not about communism?

Governor DeSantis wants Florida high school students to learn about the evils of Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong, and Fidel Castro. Let’s explore why.

The governor stated:

“You can see on a college campus students waving the hammer and sickle of the old Soviet Union flag, you will see students who will have Che Guevara T-shirts, you will see students who will idolize people like Mao Zedong. To me, this speaks to a tremendous ignorance about what those individuals represented and the evils that communism inflicted on people around the world. While it is fashionable in some circles to whitewash the history of communism.”

Their Lieutenant Governor Jeannette Núñez doubled down with the following:

“Across this country, we’re seeing communism and socialism being romanticized.”

These aren’t just empty talking points meant to infuriate rabid parents concerned about what the public education system is pouring into their children’s minds.

According to a study conducted by the group Victims of Communism, 70% of Millennials say they are likely to vote for a socialist, while one in three view communism favorably. Additionally, 22% of millennials believe:

“Society would be better off if all private property were abolished.”

You know what, maybe Mrs. Santiago is right. It is perhaps more important to discuss gender ideology with young children than it is to spend 45 minutes a day a year educating children on how terrible communism is. But wait a minute… no, that’s not quite right.

Even our elected officials in this country point to a deficit in understanding what these principles are. Take Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who famously whispered this past March:

“Let me tell you a secret. Most people don’t really know what capitalism is. Most people don’t even know what socialism is.”

She is not wrong; she is included in this group of some people. So it’s good that she’s self-aware.

Maybe he can take another Florida vacation like he’s been known to do. But next year, say around November 7th for a 45-minute lesson on what communism is and why it’s terrible. That would be taxpayer money well spent.
