Eddie Howe: Newcastle Names Former Bournemouth Manager As Steve Bruce Replacement | Football news


Eddie Howe has been confirmed as Newcastle’s new head coach with a contract until the summer of 2024.

Howe, who has been out of work since leaving Bournemouth in 2020 following his Premier League relegation, replaces Steve Bruce at St James’ Park.

Newcastle had previously contacted former Arsenal and current Villarreal manager Unai Emery about the vacancy. but he chose to stay with the LaLiga team.

“It is a great honor to become the head coach of a club with the stature and history of Newcastle United,” Howe said. “It is a very proud day for me and my family.

“This is a wonderful opportunity, but there is also a lot of work ahead and I am looking forward to getting into training camp to start working with the players.

“I would like to thank the owners of the club for this opportunity and to thank the club’s fans for the incredible welcome they have already given me. I am very excited to begin our journey together.”

The new club owners were impressed with the way Howe presented his views on Newcastle’s future and his level of research.

He had been in talks to become Celtic’s manager earlier this year. before the appointment of Ange Postecoglou, but the negotiations failed.

Howe watched from the stands as Newcastle drew 1-1 at Brighton on Saturday, making them the only team without a win in the Premier League this season.

Newcastle United co-owner Amanda Staveley said: “Eddie has impressed us incredibly through what has been a rigorous hiring process.

“In addition to his obvious accomplishments with AFC Bournemouth, where he had a transformative impact, he is a passionate and dynamic coach who has clear ideas on how to move this team and the club forward.

“It fits perfectly with what we are trying to build here. We are delighted to welcome Eddie and his staff to St. James’ Park and we look forward to working together toward our collective ambitions.”
