As we approach the two qualifying rounds for the November World Cup in the CONCACAF region, the big three are occupying the top spots, but they probably won’t continue to do so due to the head-to-head matches to come.
First up is the big showdown between the United States and Mexico (November 12), which is always a highlight on the CONCACAF qualifying schedule. That will be followed by an equally compelling qualifier between Canada and Mexico just four days later in Edmonton. Mexico (1st, 14 points) enters the difficult stretch ahead of both USA (2nd, 11 points) and Canada (3rd, 10 points) in the standings.
Under the new coach Hernán ‘Bolillo’ Gómez, last place Honduras (8th, 3 points) will look to revive his World Cup hopes in a must-win at home against Panama (4th, 8 points), with the winner of the match between The Savior (6th, 5 points) and Jamaica (7th, 5 points) looking to take advantage and catch Panama in the standings. Fourth place will be worth a spot in a World Cup play-in series for the team that can get it.

The top three teams in the standings get a direct place to the Qatar World Cup 2022, while the fourth-place team advances to an intercontinental tiebreaker. The first tiebreakers of the classification are (1) goal difference, (2) goals scored and (3) most of the points obtained in matches between tied teams. How CONCACAF World Cup Qualification Works
Eight nations from the CONCACAF region (North America, Central America and the Caribbean) are competing for three automatic places to the Qatar World Cup 2022 in the final “octagonal” qualifying round.
The eight countries face off in a free-for-all format in which each team faces the other seven opponents once at home and once on the road. The 14 matches in total for each national team began in September 2021 and will end in March 2022.
The top three finishers will earn automatic spots for Qatar, while the fourth-place team will head to an intercontinental tiebreaker with a final ticket to Qatar up for grabs. Here are the qualifying tiebreaks for teams including by points:
- Goal difference in all group matches
- Most goals scored in all group matches
- Most of the points obtained in group matches between the teams in question.
- Goal difference from group matches between affected teams
- Most goals scored in group matches between teams involved
- Goals scored away from home (if two teams tied)
- Discipline points (based on yellow / red cards)
- FIFA draw
The Qatar World Cup will be played from November 21 to December 21. February 18, 2022.
